When setting up custom approval rules, we classify travel distance into four categories—Domestic, Regional, Inter-regional, and Intercontinental. The travel distance is based on the traveller's,
- Invoice profile (which is basically the legal entity that she belongs to) and,
- The travel destination (eg flight destination).
Domestic Travel
Domestic travel involves trips within the same country, including mainland and island territories.
Examples:
- From Jakarta to Bali if your office is in Indonesia.
- From London to Manchester if your office is in the UK.
Regional Travel
Regional travel occurs when the office and destination are in different countries within the same geographic region.
Example:
- From Thailand to Vietnam (both in ASEAN).
Inter-regional Travel
Inter-regional travel involves trips between different regions within the same continent.
Example:
- From Indonesia (ASEAN) to Japan (EAS).
Intercontinental Travel
Intercontinental travel occurs when the office and destination are in different continents.
Examples:
- Germany (WEU) to the United States (NAM).
- India (SAS) to Saudi Arabia (MEA).
Why This Matters
These updated classifications help ensure travel policies and approval flows match the cost and complexity of the journey. For example, intercontinental trips may require more approvals or different budget thresholds than regional or domestic travel.
